DEFINITION / GENERAL PURPOSE: 3/29/2017

Oversees and directs work crews in the maintenance and operations of park areas, golf course, aquatics, grounds equipment, and facility maintenance and performs related duties in order to provide a safe and enjoyable site for the public's use.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Works under the general supervision of the Grounds Superintendent.

Supervises parks and golf course Light Equipment Operators, Laborers, and Mechanic; may supervise community service workers, part time or temporary employees as required and assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises laborers, light equipment operators, mechanics and temporary employees as required.

Performs general grounds maintenance work in parks, golf course, athletics, aquatics and other areas as assigned.

Administers performance reviews on assigned crews.

Provides hands on training for all crew members to initiate all projects.

Trains employees how to operate the necessary equipment to accomplish tasks.

Monitors and manages the on-site, day to day activities of assigned crew.

Complies and enforces safety rules, policies and procedures.

Assists the superintendent with ordering equipment and project supply needs.

Performs routine safety or operators inspections and repair of related facility equipment.

Assists the superintendent in determining work schedules.

Assists in preparation and update of monthly and/or weekly reports.

Informs supervisors of project performance and employee performance.

Assists in responding to public inquiries about job tasks made by telephone, correspondence, or during public events.

May work alternate schedules in order to staff during programs offered by the department

Responsible for submitting reports to supervisor on accidents, damage to facilities and equipment, problems among staff, and complaints from facility users.

Serves as superintendent as assigned in the event of the superintendent absence.

Reports and quantifies maintenance problems, injuries and daily activities in created reports.

Adherence to attendance and call in policies are a condition of employment.

The employee must have the ability to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.

Ability to effectively communicate and work with citizens who may have complaints on services provided.

Performs other essential duties as required to achieve successful operations of the department.

Must be able to follow directions.

Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

Assists in the training and supervision of lower level employees or volunteers.

Other Duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; Associates degree in Turf Science or related field preferred; and,

Two (2) years experience in parks and recreation programs, and/or golf course operations; or

Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid Texas state driver's license or ability to obtain one by date of hire.

Must attend the required education and training to maintain required certifications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds and/or turf maintenance;

Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities;

Ability to communicate both orally and written; ability to work directly with the public;

Ability to plan and organize recreation and parks/golf course activity data and keep accurate records;

Ability to develop, coordinate and direct varied activities involved in community programs;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and general public.

SELECTION GUIDELINES:

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Pickup truck; lawn/turf and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, acidifiers/aeriation equipment , chain saw, edger's, backflows, weed trimmers, trailers, backhoe, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for lawn maintenance.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration or risk of electrical shock.
