Job Description Job Description Job Summary Responsible for
determining, marking and maintaining horizontal and vertical
control of a project or multiple projects, and assisting in
supervision of subcontractor’s work as assigned. Other positions
which may report to a Chief Field Engineer: Field Engineer,
Carpenter or Apprentice, to assist in layout. Essential Duties and
Responsibilities All duties and responsibilities include the
following, however, other duties may be assigned. To perform in
this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform
each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may

essential functions. Study and analyze construction drawings to
confirm or otherwise establish the planned layout dimensions and
elevations for the project. Inform Superintendent or Project
Manager of any variations in the project dimensions and elevations,
and assist company and subcontractor personnel to (1) understand
the layout, and (2) identify the precise locations of the elements
being installed. Supervise or perform site survey, ensure
verification and marking of actual lines and elevations to provide
visual benchmarks for the elements being installed by using
measuring tape, electronic distance measuring devices, theodolites,
and total station instruments. Measure dimensions and elevations of
installed work, marking As-Built Drawings to indicate actual
dimensions and elevations, using measuring devices, theodolites,
and total station instruments. Other functions as may be required
or assigned by Project Superintendent or other authorized
individual, including making suggestions of alternative
construction methods and techniques, and/or developing
interpretations of vague or conflicting information, etc.
Management Responsibilities May supervise Field Engineer, Carpenter
or Apprentice Knowledge/Skills/Ability Working knowledge of
Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebraic formulas and ability to apply
those formulas, and perform mathematic calculations to determine
lines, grades, points and elevations. Ability to work within
precise standards of accuracy. Skill to use transit, level,
measuring tape and conventional surveying tools. Knowledge of
standard surveying practices. Knowledge of typical construction
techniques and applications. Skill in comparing and assessing
differences in size, shape and form of lines, figures, and objects.
Skill in observing two dimensional drawings or pictures and
understanding how they will look in three dimensions as solid
objects. Ability to read and interpret construction documents.
Working knowledge of Total Station surveying Tool. Education
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in construction related field, or
an equivalent combination of education, technical training and
related experience. Job Location Florence, Texas Experience
Adequate experience in layout and surveying or an equivalent
combination of education and experience. Certificates, Licenses,
Registrations Physical Requirements Observing (seeing well, either
naturally or with correction), as in reading detailed blueprints,
drawings, sketches and plans at close proximity. Seeing and
observing at a distance as in making visual assessments of the
exact location of a marker when viewed through a surveyor’s
instrument. Expressing and exchanging ideas through oral
communication, as in issuing instructions or communicating with
personnel at the job site where equipment and construction noises
are present and talking at high volumes is required. Ascending or
descending ladders, stairs or similar devices, using feet and legs
and/or hands and arms, as in climbing to reach higher levels of
elevation at construction sites. Holding and grasping tools,
materials and other objects in performing essential construction
functions at the job site. Stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling
and walking at heights, as required. Walking, lifting and carrying
objects from different elevations, as in walking where rough
terrain and physical impediments such as sand, mud, ice or snow are
present. Special Job Dimensions Exposure to all forms of weather
conditions (hot, cold, wet, dry, humid, windy) for the entire work
day. Exposure to constant or intermittent high noise levels. May be
required to work long hours for extended periods of time. May be
required to work in high, low, exposed or confined places. Exposure
to dust and proximity to heavy moving equipment.
